If you can recall the ‘Wannabe Gujju Director’ of ‘Apahij Pyar’ in Om Shanti Om then you may not find it too hard to decode the fact that this was Mayur’s cameo appearance in the blockbuster. He has had longer screen appearances in Kookie Gulati’s Prince as P.K and Sanjay Gadhvi’s Ajab Gazab Love (2012) as T2. All of his on‐screen outings were received warmly by the audiences.
Wait! I’m not done bragging!
Here’s a selection of quotes in media about me over the years:
“Puri belongs to the emerging breed of talented youngsters who are aiming at bringing change in the way commercial cinema is written and executed.”
– Joginder Tuteja, filmibeat.com
“Screenwriter, lyricist, filmmaker, storyteller, Mayur Puri is a man of many talents. From penning the stories of blockbuster films like Om Shanti Om, ABCD – Any Body Can Dance, and the soon-to-release Happy New Year to writing lyrics of chartbuster numbers like Be Intehaan (Race 2), Saree Ke Fall Sa (R…Rajkumar), Tu Hi Tu (Kick), Johnny Johnny (Entertainment) and several others, Mayur has carved a niche for himself.”
– Esha Verma, Pandolin.com
“The romantic, almost Sufi-ana sentiment is lifted by eons in this version, as Mayur Puri’s words attain a higher class because he writes at a level that tugs at the heart (‘Tu gaya jo chhod kar / Mere dil ko tod kar / Kya mil gaya / Paas ho to bura / Door ho to bura / Aisa mere khuda kyoon hai’).”
– Rajiv Vijaykar’s review of ‘Kick’ for bollywoodhungama.com
“Mayur’s thought-provoking lyrics are an added incentive in a song that gives the feel as if it has been recorded during a live concert. A brilliant effort!”
-Faridoon Shahryar, Music Review of ‘Gangster’ @glamsham.com
“The highlight of the score is the perky and piquant ‘Johnny Johnny’ (Jigar-Priya Panchal-Madhav Krishna), again written with a lot of imagination by Mayur Puri to blend a sense of fun into the thematic aptness without any crassness ( ‘Sunta nahi baap ki/Aadatein kharaab ki/Har botal pe kehta hai yeh/Last hogi aaj ki’).”-
– Rajiv Vijaykar’s review of ‘Entertainment’ for bollywoodhungama.com
“Mayur Puri’s lyrics are cool and would remind you of what Mehmood did in Padosan”
– ‘ABCD-music review @koimoi.com
“#52: Falak dekhoon Film:Garam Masala (2005) Sonu Niigaam-Mayur Puri-Pritam. Pritam excelled in his songs by the sheer simplicity of his melodies and Mayur Puri’s Sufi-ana lyrics blurred the distinction between the Almighty and the beloved. Sonu was outstanding. This is one of the rare new songs that has a staying power.”
– Rajiv Vijaykar’s blogpost on his 101 all time top favourite songs from bollywood (wordpress.com)
“A song (Bheegi Bheegi si hain Raatein) about life and its strange ways, lyricist Mayur and composer Pritam spin the tale in such a manner that it makes for a good background piece.”
– Music Review of ‘Gangster’ @indiaglitz.com
“The lyrics (of Bezubaan) are quite poignant as well, speaking about realizing one’s worth and going for that goal…”
… I love that the song (Psycho re) doesn’t overdo it with too many arrangements, and relies on the witty lyrics by Mayur Puri and interplay between the singers and the chorus. It’s such a mad song that has so many layers to enjoy.”
…Chandu Ki Girlfriend is quite a funny track with witty lyrics by Mayur Puri, discussing this quirky guy Chandu and his gorgeous girlfriend.”
-Rumnique Nannar, Review of ABCD @bollyspice.com
“Mayur Puri’s presence as a lyricist makes one further interested in checking out what the music has to offer here…
… one also notices Mayur Puri’s lyrics that have time and again worked, especially during his association with Pritam.”
– Joginder Tuteja’s review of RACE 2 for bollywoodhungama.com
“An interesting arrangement that alternates between minimalist and soft rock, powerful lyrics (by Mayur) and James’ inspired performance ensure Bheegi bheegi is another winner.”
– Joginder Tuteja’s review of RACE 2 for bollywoodhungama.com
“Mayur Puri’s lyrics are perfect as per the situation and are witty while giving Pritam enough fodder to make sure that the song doesn’t come with a single dull moment.”
– Joginder Tuteja Music Review of ‘Singh Is Kinng’ @naachgana.com
